Charlton residents warned of phone scam impersonating police chief

1 min read

CHARLTON — The Charlton Police Department issued a warning yesterday after a resident reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be Chief Dowd and asking for donations on behalf of the department.

According to the police, the scammer used a caller ID that displayed the department’s business line, 508-248-2250, to appear legitimate.

However, the department has confirmed that neither Chief Dowd nor any of its members are currently soliciting funds from the public.

Authorities urge residents to exercise caution before engaging in any financial transactions over the phone or internet and to verify the identity of the person or organization they are dealing with.

The department reminds the community to contact their business line at any time to speak with an officer regarding potential fraudulent fundraising activities or scams.
