WILTON — A device initially believed to be a hand grenade was discovered on the Middlebrook School property on June 3, forcing the school into a temporary secure mode, police said.
At approximately 1:10 p.m., a school administrator contacted the Wilton Police Dispatch after finding the suspicious device near the school’s batting cages.
Although the location was a distance from the main school building, classes in proximity to the area were relocated for safety.
The Stamford Bomb Squad arrived at the scene by 2:04 p.m. and, with the aid of School Resource Officers and patrol units, secured the area.
The school had already initiated a secure protocol before police recommendation.
Bomb Squad technicians investigated the object and determined it to be hollow and inert.
Following the assessment, the protocol was lifted around 2:15 p.m., and the school was given an “all clear” to resume normal activities.
Authorities removed the device without further incident, and no injuries were reported.
