Orleans County receives $577,700 in grants to support outdoor recreation projects

NEWPORT — Three Orleans County organizations have been awarded a total of $577,700 in grants from the Vermont Outdoor Recreation Economic Collabora tive (VOREC) Community Grant Program. These grants are part of a statewide investment of over $6 million into Vermont’s outdoor recreation economy, supporting 51 projects across the state.

The Orleans County recipients are:

1. Newport City Downtown Development: Awarded $200,000 to establish the Newport Outdoor Recreation Collaborative and collectively create and share opportunities for recreation based in downtown Newport.
2. NorthWoods Stewardship Center: Awarded $195,700 to improve access to NorthWoods Stewardship Center facilities, build an All-Persons trail, and improve the inclusiveness of NWSC’s outdoor education programming.
3. Town of Glover: Awarded $182,000 to expand infrastructure at Glover Park to include a sensory trail and all-access outdoor play facilities.

These projects aim to enhance recreation economies, improve access to outdoor recreation for all people, and build stronger, more resilient communities in Orleans County.

Governor Scott established the VOREC Steering Committee in June 2017 to promote stewardship of state recreation assets and market Vermont’s outdoor recreation values and attributes to foster responsible and sustainable economic growth.

The VOREC Community Grant Program, now in its fourth round, has become one of the committee’s highest priorities, making significant investments in communities across the state.

Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore emphasized the importance of these grants.

“These grants are an investment in Vermont. They will help communities revitalize their outdoor recreation assets, create jobs, improve access to nature for Vermonters and visitors alike, and build stronger, more resilient communities for years to come.”

The grants awarded to Orleans County organizations demonstrate the region’s commitment to enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities and promoting economic growth through investments in nature-based activities.
