AUBURN — Authorities are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on May 24 at 5:32 p.m., involving a motorcycle and a car on South Main Street at the intersection with Witham Road.

According to the Auburn Police and Fire Departments, a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle driven by a 15-year-old girl with a learner’s permit, supervised by her mother, collided with a 2010 Kawasaki motorcycle operated by Jessica Carter, 40, of Lewiston.

Despite wearing a helmet, Carter sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene after witnesses provided CPR.

The teenage driver reportedly struggled to operate the manual transmission of the Beetle as she entered South Main Street from Witham Road, which resulted in the motorcycle swerving to avoid a collision but ultimately hitting the driver’s side of the car.

The Beetle’s occupants were not seriously injured in the crash.

The intersection was closed for several hours for accident reconstruction.

The Auburn Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the accident.

No further details have been released as the investigation is still ongoing.
