LUNENBURG — The Lunenburg Police Department issued a scam alert to residents after reports surfaced of scammers using the names of local police officers to make deceptive phone calls.
According to authorities, the scammers have been contacting residents with calls that appear to originate from the police department.
They are also using technology to make the calls seem like they are coming from a government agency or the court.
Victims of the scam have reported that the fraudulent calls are convincing, often including details such as a badge number, courthouse addresses, names of law enforcement officials, judges, and a spoofed phone number that appears legitimate.
The scam typically involves the caller, who falsely identifies themselves as a law enforcement officer, informing the victim that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
Reasons cited for the warrant include missing a court date, failing to show up for jury duty, or having an unpaid fine.
The caller then demands immediate payment to avoid arrest.
The Lunenburg Police Department strongly advises residents to never give out personal information over the phone.
They urge anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and report the incident by calling the non-emergency line at 978-582-4531.
