SHERBORN — Police are warning residents about a phone scam after receiving reports from two individuals earlier today who were targeted by fraudsters claiming to be from the Sherborn Police Department.
The residents reported receiving phone calls informing them that they had missed a court date and a warrant was out for their arrest.
To resolve the supposed warrant, the caller instructed the residents to withdraw money and deposit it at a specified location.
The Sherborn Police Department is urging the public to remain vigilant.
If anyone receives a suspicious call, text, or email purporting to be from the police, they should immediately contact the Sherborn Police Department and request to speak with an officer.
Authorities have clarified that if the Sherborn Police Department’s phone number appears on caller ID and the caller requests money, the call is fraudulent, and the receiver should not engage and hang up instead.
This scamming technique, known as “spoofing,” manipulates caller ID to display an official number.
Residents concerned about missed court dates should not address these issues over the phone with unknown callers.
Instead, they are advised to directly contact the Clerk’s Office at the Natick District Court at 508-875-7461 for accurate information regarding any court-related matters.
