HAMDEN — Police in Hamden apprehended a 47-year-old male suspect following a tense standoff on Monday evening, after he allegedly fired a pellet gun at officers and a victim, causing serious injuries.
The incident began around 4:55 p.m. on April 24 when officers were dispatched to Spruce Bank Road in response to a complaint from an individual fishing in the area.
The person reported being shot in the arm by what was believed to be a BB gun, and suspected the assailant had fled in a vehicle.
A search of the area at that time yielded no results.
Later that day, at 6:48 p.m., a 911 call brought officers back to the vicinity of Ives Street and Spruce Bank Road, where they found another victim with multiple injuries, including wounds to the face.
The nature of the weapon used was unclear until officers encountered the suspect, armed with a rifle, threatening self-harm.
When the suspect turned the weapon towards the police and began firing, it became evident that the gun was a pellet rifle.
Pellets caused damage to Hamden police vehicles.
Officers were able to subdue the suspect using less lethal bean bag projectiles, leading to his safe arrest.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for evaluation and remains under guard.
Charges are expected to be filed later.
The victim was also hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have assured the public that there is no current danger related to the incident.
