WORCESTER — Detectives from the Worcester Police Department’s newly-established Crime Gun Intelligence Unit recovered their first firearm late Monday night, officials said.
At about 9:50 p.m., officers were responding to a ShotSpotter alert when they spotted a vehicle with heavily tinted windows and a tinted license plate cover on Channing Street.
The car’s plate, which became clear once the vehicle was stopped, had been previously flagged from a ShotSpotter activation on March 19.
Before making contact with the occupants, detectives noticed the passenger making movements toward the backseat.
Both the passenger, identified as 19-year-old Suil Rosario, and the driver, 19-year-old Giancarlos Guzman, were asked to leave the vehicle and were subsequently detained.
Upon searching the car, a Glock 42 handgun with a capacity for more than 10 rounds was discovered.
Neither Rosario nor Guzman could provide a firearm carrying license or a driver’s license.
Rosario faces charges including unlawful carrying of a firearm, unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and possession of a large capacity firearm.
Guzman has been charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license.
The Worcester Police Department’s Crime Gun Intelligence Unit was created to address the increase in gun-related incidents in the city, aiming to provide rapid and precise intelligence to reduce gun violence.
