Whitman police to charge driver after SUV crashes into apartment building

WHITMAN — A 42-year-old East Wareham man will face charges after his SUV crashed into an apartment building on South Avenue Monday morning, Whitman Police Chief Timothy Hanlon and Fire Chief Timothy Clancy reported.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 15, Whitman Police and Fire Departments received a 911 call reporting that a car had crashed into the building at 412 South Ave.

First responders arrived to find an SUV that had struck the corner of the apartment building.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the SUV, was transported by a Whitman Fire ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The Building Inspector also responded to the scene to assess the structural integrity of the building.

The driver will be summonsed to court and charged with a marked lanes violation, operating under the influence of drugs, possession of a Class A substance, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

The Whitman Police Department continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
