EAST HAVEN — Two juveniles were arrested early Thursday morning after attempting to steal a motor vehicle and fleeing police in East Haven.

The East Haven Police Department reported that officers responded to a call regarding suspicious individuals at a complex on 216 Laurel Street at about 12:48 a.m. The suspects were allegedly checking car doors in the parking lot and were seen entering a gray Kia Rio.

Officer Ryan Michalowski arrived on the scene to find the vehicle occupied and backing out of a parking space.

After Michalowski blocked the car and activated his lights, the driver of the Kia collided with the police cruiser in an attempt to escape.

The driver then fled on foot towards Laurel Street, while the passenger remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

Officers identified a possible address for the fleeing suspect on Laurel Street.

Upon making contact with the juvenile at the residence, it was confirmed that he was the individual who had fled from the stolen Kia.

He was arrested and transported to the East Haven Police Department for processing alongside the other juvenile suspect.

The first juvenile was charged with third-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit third-degree burglary, larceny of a motor vehicle, and conspiracy to commit larceny of a motor vehicle.

He was scheduled to appear in court on April 12 at the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters in New Haven and was found to have an active “take into custody order.” Following processing, he was sent to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention facility.

The second juvenile faced the same set of charges and is scheduled to appear in court on April 15 at Waterbury Juvenile Matters.

The second suspect was released to a guardian after processing.
