NEWBURY — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced a temporary traffic control plan including a speed limit reduction and a shift to the right for both eastbound and westbound lanes on the Plum Island Turnpike beginning Friday, April 19, to facilitate ongoing bridge repairs.
The change is part of a larger $7.7 million drawbridge operation and repair contract and is expected to last until later in the summer.
Alternating traffic patterns may be implemented at times to allow for new traffic markings, though one lane will remain open in each direction.
The Plum Island Turnpike drawbridge over the Plum Island River has been closed to marine vessels since early March and will continue to be until August 5, to complete necessary structural repairs.
Additional repairs to the road surface were carried out earlier this week.
Drivers should anticipate delays, reduce speed, and exercise caution when traveling through the construction zone.
MassDOT will provide signage, law enforcement details, and messaging to direct traffic.
