NEWPORT, RI — Police Officers and Fire Department personnel responded to an emergency at Festival Field Housing Development late Tuesday night, where a 2-month-old child was found unresponsive.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:55 p.m. on April 11.
After receiving the call, emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to attend to the infant.
The child was immediately transported to Newport Hospital, where, despite efforts, was pronounced dead.
In the wake of the tragic event, Newport Police Detectives launched an investigation that led to the detention of a 17-year-old juvenile.
The teen is facing felony delinquent charges and is scheduled for arraignment in family court.
Details of the charges have not been disclosed.
The Newport Police Department has stated that the investigation is ongoing and that no further information is available at this time.
