NORTH BRANFORD — A suspect wanted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that took place on March 28 has been apprehended in Sebring, Florida, authorities announced Monday.
James Black, 40, was taken into custody by the Highland County Sheriff’s Office at 6:13 p.m. on Sunday after the North Branford Police Department issued an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Black, a Florida resident, is facing charges for manslaughter, evading responsibility resulting in death, and tampering with evidence related to the accident that claimed the life of pedestrian David Horbal.
Black is currently being held in Florida as he awaits extradition to Connecticut, where he will appear in court in New Haven.
Authorities expressed their condolences to Horbal’s family and friends, with the hope that Black’s arrest will aid in their healing process.
The North Branford Police Department acknowledged the tireless efforts of its officers and thanked partner agencies, including the East Haven, Branford, Madison, Guilford, and New Haven Police Departments, the South Central Regional Traffic Unit, and the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office, for their assistance in the investigation.
The community and local businesses were also recognized for their invaluable support and contributions to the case.
