JAFFREY — A significant storm system that brought icy conditions on March 23 led to numerous emergency calls across southwestern New Hampshire, with fire departments responding to a variety of incidents involving downed trees and wires.
The Jaffrey Fire Department was dispatched to several locations throughout the town, including Harkness Road, Bryant Road, and Main Street, to address reports of trees on wires or downed lines.
In Bennington, fire-rescue teams closed off a section of Bible Hill Road near Starlett Road due to similar issues.
Peterborough Fire & Rescue were called out to Burke Road and Upper Union Street for downed wires that had caught fire.
A portion of Route 101 near Cunningham Pond Road was also closed temporarily due to fallen trees.
Around 2:50 a.m., Peterborough units responded to Route 123 in Sharon following reports of a large tree obstructing the road.
The Greenfield Volunteer Fire Department and Lyndeborough NH Fire Department collaboratively shut down Forest Road near the town line due to trees and wires down in the roadway.
Separately, the Rindge Fire Department was called to Marshall’s for a reported smoke condition within the building and attended a transformer fire near the plaza.
Additionally, the Lempster Fire Department and Marlow Fire & EMS Department closed a part of Route 10 due to road blockages caused by fallen trees and wires.
Chesterfield Fire & Mutual Aid responded to Old Chesterfield Road for a second alarm building fire.
As cleanup efforts continue throughout the area today, authorities anticipate additional calls for service.
