DERBY — Students from Derby Elementary School and members of the Four Seasons Garden Club were treated to an engaging presentation on wildlife tracking on March 12, led by Andy Cappello from the Northwoods Stewardship Center.
The interactive session focused on the “3 P’s” of tracking wildlife – print, pattern, and place – and included demonstrations on how different animals move.
Cappello’s presentation highlighted the importance of tracking for conservation efforts and educated students on identifying various animal tracks in the wild. Students actively participated, assisting in demonstrating the movement patterns of different animals.
The practical aspect of the presentation was a hit, as students successfully identified mystery animal tracks using the techniques they learned.
The day continued with a meeting of the Four Seasons Garden Club at VT Pie and Pasta, where club member Christina Cotnoir shared insights on foraging native wild ramps. Cotnoir educated members about identifying, sustainably harvesting, and growing this North American spring delicacy, known for its health benefits.
