Rye police warn of ‘smash and grab’ thefts from parked vehicles

RYE — Police are warning residents and visitors to avoid leaving valuables in their vehicles after a series of “smash and grab” thefts were reported at local businesses earlier this week.

According to the Rye Police Department, several Seacoast businesses reported incidents where parked vehicles had their windows broken and items such as purses, bags, phones, and coins were stolen.

The thefts primarily occurred in the parking lots of gyms and large shopping malls.

Video surveillance footage indicates that multiple individuals are working together to commit these crimes simultaneously.

The suspects quickly break the vehicle’s window, grab the most easily accessible items, and flee the scene.

Police are urging people not to leave any belongings in their parked vehicles, as these types of break-ins are not only costly but also cause significant damage to the vehicles.

They encourage everyone to spread the word to family, friends, and fellow gym-goers about the importance of keeping their vehicles clear of valuables.

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is asked to contact the police immediately.
