PROCTOR — A 77-year-old Proctor man died in a single-car crash on Vermont Route 3 early Thursday morning.
According to Vermont State Police, John Cioffi was traveling south on Route 3 around 5:18 a.m. when his 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee left the west side of the roadway and traveled down an embankment.
The vehicle struck tree stumps at the base of the embankment and began to roll.
Cioffi, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Route 3 and Loop Street.
Road conditions were wet at the time due to rainy weather.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Proctor Fire Department and Regional Ambulance Service assisted state police at the scene.
