BOSTON — Boston Police Department’s Youth Violence Strike Force officers arrested a man for gun and drug charges following a traffic stop in Mattapan, officials reported Saturday.
At approximately 8:55 p.m. on Friday, officers patrolling near Morton St and Harvard St spotted a vehicle with heavily tinted windows speeding through the intersection.
The vehicle made a sudden u-turn when police attempted to pull it over, but officers were able to stop the car along Morton St.
Approaching the vehicle, officers asked the passengers to lower their windows due to the tint.
They noticed Tyrell Murphy, 32, from Hyde Park, appeared nervous and had a noticeable bulge in his hoodie pocket.
Officers requested the occupants to exit the vehicle after which Murphy resisted and reached towards his waist.
Officers managed to subdue Murphy, finding a loaded Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380 firearm with an attached laser, which had been stolen.
The gun contained one chambered .380 round and a black Promag Extended Magazine with nine additional rounds.
A search of Murphy’s belongings revealed a Ziplock-style bag with suspected Ecstasy pills marked with a “lego” logo and three bags of marijuana, leading to his arrest.
Murphy faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to distribute Class B and Class D substances, and receiving stolen property under $1200.
He is due for arraignment at Dorchester District Court.
