MONTPELIER — A Vermont state representative was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a traffic stop for a vehicle violation early Wednesday morning.
At about 8:24 a.m., Montpelier police conducted a stop in the Capitol Complex parking lot on Baldwin Street after noticing an excessively loud muffler on a vehicle driven by James Carroll, 62, of Bennington.
Officers reported signs of alcohol impairment when interacting with Carroll, who refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests.
However, a roadside breath sample allegedly revealed a blood alcohol concentration above the 0.08% legal limit.
Carroll, a state representative for the Bennington district, was taken into custody and processed at the Montpelier Police Department.
He was later released with a citation to appear in the Vermont Superior Court, Washington Criminal Division, on March 7 at 8:30 a.m. for the DUI charge.
The Montpelier Police Department confirmed the arrest in a press release, noting the public disclosure was necessary due to Carroll’s government position.
No additional details have been released regarding the incident.
