LENOX — Authorities have confirmed that the human remains found on Lenox Mountain are those of Susan Lockwood, a Richmond woman who disappeared in October.
The Berkshire District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday that Lockwood’s identity was confirmed using dental records by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The identification followed a discovery made by a hiker on Feb. 9, who found a hiking boot containing human remains off a trail on the mountain.
Lockwood, 66, was last seen on Oct. 30.
Her vehicle was later located on Reservoir Road, which is near several hiking trails she was known to visit, according to her husband.
After her disappearance, extensive searches were carried out by the State Police Special Emergency Response Team, the K-9 Unit, and the Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue Team.
The most recent search, a three-day effort that concluded just days before the announcement, led to the additional discovery of clothing and personal items near the bottom of a cliff situated between Reservoir Road and Tanglewood.
A state trooper and his K-9 partner were credited with the find.
While the cause of death is still under investigation, the DA’s office has stated there is no suspicion of foul play, nor do they believe Lockwood’s death was accidental.
The community had been deeply involved in the search for Lockwood since her disappearance, with many holding out hope for her safe return.
The confirmation of her identity brings a tragic end to the months-long search and begins a period of mourning for her family and friends.
