MORGAN –– Lake Seymour, Echo Lake, and Lake Memphremagog will once again play host to the Eli Goss Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament from February 10 to 18, continuing a cherished local tradition that began in 2011. This annual event, in memory of Eli Goss, has not only become a highlight for ice fishing enthusiasts but also a beacon of community spirit and generosity, supporting local students through scholarships.
Since its inception, the tournament has proudly awarded 109 scholarships, amounting to over $78,300, to graduating seniors from the local high schools, United Christian Academy (UCA) and North Country Union High School (NCUHS). Registration for the event will take place at the Public Beach Fishing Access in Morgan.
The tournament has its roots in a poignant story of community unity and remembrance. Eli Goss, a student at UCA known for his athletic talent in varsity soccer and basketball, tragically lost his life in a truck accident on September 17, 2010.
The first tournament was organized by NCUHS students in the winter following Eli’s passing, aimed at raising scholarship funds for Eli’s graduating class at UCA. This gesture of goodwill laid the foundation for the annual event, which has since grown in size and significance.
Organizers emphasize that the tournament, and the scholarship fund it supports, is a testament to Eli’s enduring legacy.
The tournament and its associated scholarship fund, supported entirely by donations from friends, families, and local businesses, aim to recognize dedicated students who balance academics, sports, jobs, and personal commitments with courage and care.
