Williamsburg ice skater rescued after falling through thin ice

WILLIAMSBURG — A male ice skater was rescued Saturday after he fell into the frigid waters of a beaver pond on Briar Hill Road.

The Williamsburg Fire Department, accompanied by Highland Ambulance and the Massachusetts State Police, were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:45 p.m. following reports of the accident.

Williamsburg Fire Chief Connell, recognizing the need for specialized equipment, requested assistance from Goshen Fire and Northampton Fire and Rescue en route to the incident.

Responders found the victim roughly 400 feet from shore, submerged up to his chest in the icy water.

Goshen Fire swiftly deployed a rescue boat with two crew members, reaching and safely retrieving the skater from the precarious situation.

Once onshore, Highland Ambulance paramedics provided immediate medical care to the individual who was then transported to the hospital with injuries determined to be non-life threatening.

Officials expressed their appreciation for the quick and coordinated efforts of all parties involved, including the Goshen Firefighters Association, Massachusetts State Police, Highland Ambulance, Northampton Fire Rescue, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and the Northampton Control Dispatch Center for their crucial communication support during the rescue.
