WELLESLEY — A solo vehicle accident on Route 9 resulted in one fatality early Wednesday morning, authorities reported.
At around 7:16 a.m., Wellesley Police Department’s Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a collision on Route 9 westbound near Cedar Street.
Police, fire, and emergency medical personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene.
Police officers Tim Dennehy and Jacob Drapkin arrived to find an SUV that had collided with a utility pole and then a tree.
The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was unconscious and unresponsive upon their arrival.
Despite efforts by Wellesley firefighters and Cataldo ambulance staff performing CPR and advanced life support care, the victim was later pronounced dead at Newton Wellesley Hospital at 8:10 a.m.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The crash led to the closure of one lane on Route 9 westbound for the duration of the morning as investigators worked on the scene and crews from Wellesley Municipal Light Plant secured the power lines and replaced the damaged utility pole.
The accident reconstruction team from Wellesley Police Department, including Lieutenant Scott Showstead, Sergeant Mike Lemenager, and Officer Mark Knapp, began a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances of the crash.
Preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was traveling west on Route 9 when it veered off the road, striking and severing the utility pole before hitting a tree and coming to a stop.
The investigation is active and ongoing as Wellesley Police continue to analyze evidence from the crash site and vehicle to determine the cause.
