Newton police recover over 1,000 pieces of stolen mail, two arrested

NEWTON — In the pre-dawn hours of Nov. 27, Newton Police successfully recovered over a thousand pieces of mail following a vehicle pursuit that started in Wellesley.

Newton Police were alerted to the chase around 4 a.m. when Wellesley Police Department reported a mail theft and were pursuing the suspect’s vehicle.

An officer from the Newton Police Department spotted the vehicle traveling on Rt. 9 in Newton and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop near Hammond Pond Parkway.

The suspect’s vehicle fled at a high rate of speed toward Brookline, prompting a chase.

Shortly after, the officer found the vehicle crashed on Newton St. in Brookline.

After a brief foot chase, two adult males were apprehended and arrested.

The suspects, identified as Yasser Teixeira Mendonca from New York and Dahshein Karon Perry from Massachusetts, are facing charges of Receiving Stolen Property and Failure to Stop for Police.

Both men are scheduled for arraignment in Newton District Court later today.

Authorities praised the prompt and coordinated response between the Newton and Wellesley police departments, which led to the recovery of the stolen mail and the arrest of the suspects.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the mail theft operation.
