BOSTON — A Boston woman was arrested on charges of animal cruelty after allegedly beating a dog in the city’s downtown area, police said.
At about 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday, officers assigned to District A-1 (Downtown) took 26-year-old Jasmine Velasquez into custody following reports of animal abuse near Boston Common.
According to authorities, police were on a routine walk and talk patrol when they heard a dog crying near 131 Tremont Street.
A passerby alerted the officers to a woman who was reportedly assaulting the animal.
Upon arrival at the scene, the officers witnessed Velasquez kick the dog.
They intervened quickly, separating her from the dog and moving the animal to safety due to the presence of broken glass and an unidentified liquid on the ground.
Multiple witnesses provided accounts to the officers, alleging they saw Velasquez hit the dog numerous times with her fists, feet, and a glass bottle.
Velasquez was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and assault and battery on a police officer.
She is expected to face these charges at her arraignment in Boston Municipal Court.
The dog was taken into the care of Animal Control, which responded to the incident at District A-1 to ensure its well-being and safety.
