When officers arrived at the scene, they found the house empty but noticed an open back door. A search behind the home’s garage uncovered several items believed to be taken from the residence.

A K-9 unit deployed to the scene traced a scent through the woods, leading officers to set up a perimeter. Canto, who matched the description of the intruder seen in the surveillance footage, was located walking on Lake Road. Further search by the K-9 unit found more stolen items along the path where Canto had walked.

During her arrest, police also discovered a small amount of cocaine in Canto’s possession. She was arraigned in Orleans District Court later that day and was released on personal recognizance, under the stipulation that she not return to the Lake Road property.

The Newport Police Department extended gratitude to the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department for assisting with the arrest.
