NEWPORT — A Newport man with a history of criminal convictions has been arrested and charged with receiving stolen property after being found in possession of a stolen e-bike, according to Newport Police Department Chief Travis Bingham.
Karl Cloney Jr., 40, of Newport, was taken into custody Thursday night after police received a tip from the bike’s owner, who provided a description and photograph of the stolen e-bike. Officers located Cloney pushing the e-bike on Glen Road at approximately 10:39 p.m., a little over an hour after the report was made.
Cloney, who has prior convictions for burglary, grand larceny, and petit theft and is currently out on bail related to drug charges, was arrested following an on-the-spot investigation.
Although the State’s Attorney’s Office requested a $5,000 bail for Cloney, a judge decided to release him without bail. However, Cloney was ordered not to make any contact with the victim. He is slated to appear in Orleans District Court on Oct. 10.
