Police charge man with fleeing crash scene in Rupert

RUPERT — Police are seeking the public’s help in locating the driver who fled the scene of a crash in Rupert.

The single-vehicle crash took place on Vermont Route 30 near Sykes Hollow Road on July 1.

Police say that the vehicle that caused the property damage left the scene and did not report the incident.

The vehicle was traveling north on Vermont Route 30 before driving outside the northbound fog line and into the embankment.

Police say the vehicle traveled through the embankment and collided with a power pole which snapped the pole in half.

Physical evidence on the road revealed the vehicle continued north on Vermont Route 30 away from the scene.

Troopers located the vehicle of interest parked in a driveway on Vermont Route 30 in Pawlet.

They attempted to speak with the driver during the morning of the incident but were unsuccessful.

Later in the day, troopers were contacted by the driver, who was identified as Grady Matteson, 35, of Pawlet.

Matteson was issued a criminal citation to answer the offenses of leaving the scene of an accident, negligent operation, and negligent operation.
