NEWPORT — Newport Police apprehended a local man on Monday, following an alleged store burglary over the weekend. The man is charged with felony burglary, according to Police Chief Travis Bingham.
Mark Marsden, 59, of Newport, was arrested at his residence on Judd Drive.
His arrest stems from a reported break-in at an East Main Street business that was brought to the attention of Newport police around 9:20 a.m. Sunday, May 21.
Responding officers found a window had been broken at the business. They also discovered that the cash box had been tampered with and opened, and approximately $900 worth of merchandise was missing.
An initial investigation revealed that a man had unlawfully entered the store around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, May 20, absconding with more than $1,800 in merchandise and cash.
Further investigation led officers to identify Marsden, who is known to Newport Police, as the suspect.
Following his arrest, Marsden was held on $5,000 bail.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Orleans Criminal Court this afternoon.
