According to a statement from Newport Police Chief Travis Bingham, a Newport police officer stationed at Poulin Grain observed the truck traveling eastbound on Main Street at an extremely high rate of speed at around 1:58 a.m. this morning.

The officer immediately activated his cruiser’s lights and sirens and began following the vehicle.

The truck then allegedly fled north on Pine Hill Road and failed to stop at a stop sign before continuing on towards Crawford Road.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle at this point.

The vehicle was later observed by another Newport police officer near the Four Seasons Motel on Commerce Way in Derby, Vermont. Once again, the vehicle allegedly fled from police, this time traveling north on Route 5.

The vehicle came to a stop on Route 5 near the I-91 northbound off-ramp after a pursuit lasting approximately 3.6 miles.

While speaking with the driver, who was later identified as Earle, officers reportedly detected an odor of intoxicants.

Earle subsequently submitted to field sobriety testing, but was unable to complete all of the tests.

Earle has been charged with excessive speed, careless and negligent operation, eluding a police officer, gross negligent operation, and driving under the influence.

He was transported to the Newport Police Department for booking.
