4 arrested in Rutland drug sweep

RUTLAND — Four people were arrested following an incident in Rutland City on Wednesday.

Authorities say they executed a search warrant at 25 Cresent Street as part of a multi-agency investigation into drug trafficking.

Police say the search warrant was obtained by the Rutland City Police Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Vermont State Police Drug Task Force.

Entry was made by Homeland Security’s SRT unit.

Once entry was gained, law enforcement encountered several subjects inside the home including three juveniles.

Police arrested Patrick Higgins, 43, of Rutland on charges of selling cocaine near a school zone, Michele Higgins, 36, of Rutland, on charges of selling cocaine, Nicholas Henning, 42, of Rutland, on charges of selling cocaine, and Matthew Layden, 32, of Rutland City, who had a warrant out for his arrest.

Police say a search of the home yielded heroin, crack, two stolen handguns, over $12,000 in currency, and other evidence of drug trafficking.

This is an active investigation with more arrests anticipated, police say.
