NEWPORT – The local toy drive Operation Santa had another successful year, bringing smiles to over 310 children at the time of delivery.
Organized by the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, 2021 marked the 14th year of the local project. Last year over 270 children received gifts and clothing through the drive.
The donations came from local law enforcement, businesses, and community members.
“This is my favorite thing to do,” dispatcher Tammy LaCourse, who started the project and continues to be a major part of its success, said. “I am overwhelmed how our community steps up and makes it all happen.”
Chief Travis Bingham of the Newport Police Department said he was happy to be a part of Operation Santa and likes the community policing part of it.
“It’s nice to give back to the community that we work in,” Bingham said.
Border Patrol Agent Erik Lavallee said they are always grateful to be able to participate in the project.
“These last two years have been so devastating to so many that being able to help out a little really brings out the true meaning of Christmas and community,” Lavallee said.
Sheriff Jennifer Harlow acknowledged the community that makes the program possible as well as the work LaCourse does each year.
“Our own Tammy Lacourse receives all the donations and packages them up so we can all deliver them, Sheriff Harlow said. “To know we have made a family’s holiday a little easier makes it all worthwhile.”
States Attorney Jennifer Barrett thanked the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department for organizing another successful toy drive for the children in our community.
“Our community is full of giving and kind people, Barrett said. “We’re lucky to sponsor children, help deliver toys, and generally be a part of this wonderful event.”
