DERBY LINE — The U.S. and Canada have agreed to keep the border closed to non-essential travel for another 30 days.
Non-essential travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.
Americans and Canadians also cross the land border every day to do essential work or for other urgent or essential reasons, and that travel will not be impacted.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said that the US-Canada border will be among the first borders to open.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today that it will be “undoubtedly longer,” before the restriction is removed.
The border was closed on March 21 as a way to stem the coronavirus pandemic and was scheduled to expire on Tuesday, April 21.
Normally, 200,000 people cross the border daily.
The US-Canada land border serves as an economic engine that supports over $1.7 billion dollars in daily cross-border trade.
