NEWPORT — A serial drunk driver will spend 6-15 years behind bars after being convicted of his 7th DUI offense.
Harry Norway, 48, a resident of Orleans County, was recently convicted of his 7th DUI, attempting to elude, false pretenses, and driving with license suspended.
According to court records, back in July of 2017, Norway led police on a chase through Brownington after police were notified by witnesses that he was so intoxicated he had fallen out of his truck while parked at the Evansville Trading Post.
While responding to the scene, police say Norway was headed toward the trooper at a high rate of speed, before the trooper swerved to avoid the collision.
While in pursuit, police say other motorists had to swerve to avoid colliding with his truck.
He eventually pulled into a driveway in Brownington and exited the vehicle, where he was taken into custody.
Norway was sentenced to serve 6-15 years behind bars.
The Orleans County State’s Attorney’s Office says they requested a more significant jail sentence.
“Serial drunk drivers routinely risk the lives of the citizens of Orleans County,” State’s Attorney Jennifer Barrett said. “We have no choice but to protect the citizens and incapacitate this type of offender.”
