SANDY CREEK — The New York State Police are investigating an early morning fire that destroyed two campers at Brennan’s Beach RV Resort in the town of Sandy Creek, Oswego County.
No injuries were reported, and there is no indication of foul play.
At approximately 3 a.m. on June 4, a seasonal resident at the campground awoke to find a fire spreading across his campsite.
The resident, who resides at site #1209 during the summer months, reported that he and his wife had maintained a small, contained campfire on their deck earlier in the evening before going to bed around 11 p.m.
According to the resident, he awoke several hours later to find that the flames had spread approximately 10 feet from the original fire location.
He immediately alerted his wife, who contacted 911.
The resident and nearby neighbors attempted to control the fire with a garden hose, but the fire quickly grew out of control.
The flames ultimately consumed the caller’s camper and a neighboring unit.
The second camper, which housed multiple large propane tanks, caught fire, and the tanks exploded during the incident.
Multiple local fire departments responded and extinguished the blaze.
The New York State Police, along with the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, conducted a joint investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates the fire was accidental in nature.
There is no evidence of arson or suspicious activity.
The caller’s camper and all personal belongings were destroyed.
The neighboring unit also sustained a total loss.
The investigation remains ongoing.
