COLCHESTER — Vermont State Police arrested a South Burlington man Saturday evening after receiving multiple reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Interstate 89.

Ramy Ghaly, 44, was taken into custody and charged with gross negligent operation and DUI refusal following the incident that occurred around 7:17 p.m.

According to police, troopers from the Williston Barracks responded to calls about a wrong-way driver on I-89 near Colchester.

Witnesses reported that a vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes, passing several vehicles before correcting its direction at Exit 17.

The vehicle then continued south in the proper lane before eventually stopping on the shoulder, where troopers located it.

Upon making contact with Ghaly, officers observed signs of impairment, police said.

Following an investigation at the scene, Ghaly was arrested and transported to the Williston Barracks for processing.

Ghaly was cited to appear in Chittenden County Criminal Division to answer to the charges.
