NEWBURGH — A police pursuit in the early morning hours of April 25 ended in a fatal crash that killed a 25-year-old Otisville man.
New York State troopers attempted to stop a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck on Route 9W in the town of Newburgh at approximately 3:43 a.m. after observing vehicle and traffic violations.
The driver failed to comply, prompting troopers to initiate a pursuit that traveled south on Route 9W to State Route 32 and then to I-84 westbound.
Troopers discontinued the pursuit due to the suspect vehicle traveling at dangerously high speeds.
Shortly after, troopers discovered the vehicle had crashed off the shoulder of the roadway.
According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect vehicle collided with a tractor without a trailer, causing the driver to lose control of the pickup and crash.
Phelipe Figueroa, 25, of Otisville, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, where he died.
The driver, Liam F. McNichol, 25, of Port Jervis, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with minor injuries.
Charges against McNichol are pending.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office was notified of the incident and responded.
