ELMIRA — A man was shot by police after allegedly pointing a handgun at officers responding to a domestic disturbance early Friday morning.
Elmira police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of East Water Street at approximately 4:37 a.m. on April 25 for a reported disturbance where a female could be heard screaming.
Upon arrival, officers located a female with an apparent leg injury who was crying and visibly upset.
The woman reported that a male had assaulted her and held her against her will at the residence, according to police.
Officers determined there was a valid order of protection in place protecting the female from the male.
While officers allowed the male to gather clothing from the residence, he grabbed what appeared to be a handgun from a bed.
Police said the man refused numerous orders to drop the weapon and exit the room.
An officer discharged a Taser at the male, which was ineffective, and the man retreated to a small closet.
According to police, the male then exited the closet and pointed the handgun at officers, prompting an Elmira police officer to discharge his duty firearm, striking the man.
The male was taken into custody, provided medical assistance and transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police reported the man was stable and alert at the time of their statement.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The Elmira Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, the West Elmira Police Department and the New York State Police.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
East Water Street has been reopened to vehicle traffic.
