DANVILLE — Vermont State Police arrested a Barre man on multiple charges including DUI after observing erratic driving on US-2 near Dole Hill Road Thursday morning.
Troopers from the St. Johnsbury Barracks were on patrol around 9:50 a.m. when they were alerted to a gold Toyota Corolla operating erratically in the area.
Minutes later, troopers located the vehicle and observed the driver, later identified as Walter Baldwin, 31, failing to maintain his lane of travel and swerving into oncoming traffic.
Baldwin then parked his vehicle in the opposing lane of US-2, according to police.
When troopers approached, Baldwin reportedly exited his vehicle and walked into oncoming traffic, causing several motorists to swerve to avoid hitting him.
Troopers said Baldwin retreated to his vehicle and failed to obey commands, requiring officers to escort him to a safer location.
After observing signs of impairment, troopers conducted field sobriety tests and subsequently took Baldwin into custody.
Baldwin was transported to the Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury Barracks and cited on charges of DUI-drug, DUI-criminal refusal, gross negligent operation, impeding public officers, contempt of court, and multiple violations of conditions of release.
He is scheduled to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court on Monday, Aug. 4, at 8:30 a.m.
