NEWBURY — The Newbury Police Department issued a scam alert Tuesday after residents reported receiving fraudulent calls from someone claiming to be a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
According to police, the impersonator tells residents there is a drug trafficking warrant for their arrest that will result in deportation.
When questioned, the caller provides a fake badge number and callback phone number, and attempts to gather personal information from residents.
Police noted the caller did not have an accent, potentially making the scam more convincing to some residents.
Authorities advise anyone receiving such calls to remain calm, avoid sharing personal information, hang up immediately, and contact local police.
This scam appears to be targeting local residents with threats of legal action and deportation to extract personal information.
The Newbury Police Department reminds residents that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not demand personal information over the phone or make threats of immediate arrest.
