SOUTH GLENS FALLS — New York State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday at the intersection of State Route 9 and Catherine Street.

Troopers from the Troop G Community Stabilization Unit attempted to locate Billy Cassell III, 45, of Kingsbury, around 12:13 p.m. due to an active arrest warrant from Washington County.

After spotting Cassell driving in the State Route 9 area, troopers attempted to stop his vehicle, but he failed to comply, initiating a pursuit.

The chase ended when Cassell crashed into a home at the intersection of State Route 9 and Catherine Street.

Cassell exited the vehicle and fled on foot carrying what has been determined to be a loaded Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., following a brief foot pursuit, troopers located Cassell attempting to hide in front of a residence.

Despite multiple commands to drop the firearm, Cassell raised the weapon toward troopers, prompting one trooper to fire his department-issued firearm, striking Cassell in the right shoulder.

Troopers immediately provided medical aid until EMS arrived and transported Cassell to Albany Medical Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

A passenger in Cassell’s vehicle also fled on foot after the crash but was apprehended by South Glens Falls Police at approximately 12:32 p.m. on Jackson Avenue without incident.

State Route 9 (Saratoga Road) remains closed between Marion Avenue and Jackson Avenue, with the closure expected to continue into the late evening.
