MARATHON — Two Massachusetts residents were arrested on multiple drug charges after their vehicle crashed into a tree in upstate New York on Monday morning, authorities said.
Rae Wilder, 46, of South Hadley, and Joseph Furtado Jr., 54, of Greenfield, were taken into custody following the single-vehicle accident on McGraw Marathon Road in the Town of Marathon, according to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers responded to the scene at approximately 8:12 a.m. along with the Marathon Fire Department and MAVAC ambulance service.
Investigators determined that Wilder, who was driving the vehicle, was impaired by drugs when the crash occurred.
Both occupants suffered injuries in the collision, though the extent of their injuries was not disclosed.
During the investigation, officers discovered an undisclosed amount of controlled substances in the possession of both individuals.
Wilder faces felony charges of third-degree and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, along with misdemeanor charges of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree criminal possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
She was also cited for speed not prudent and failure to keep right.
Furtado was charged with third-degree and fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor charges of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree criminal possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both suspects were arraigned through the Centralized Arraignment Process at 8 p.m. Monday and released on their own recognizance.
They are scheduled to appear in Town of Marathon Court on May 8 at 6:30 p.m.
