BENTON — Maine State Police arrested a 32-year-old man Tuesday after multiple 911 calls reported someone walking down Unity Road firing a pistol recklessly, including toward homes.

Troopers from the Central Field Troop responded to the area around 11:30 a.m. and quickly located and detained Joseph Costa without incident.

Costa, who is currently unhoused, was found in possession of a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

He was initially transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Kennebec County Jail.

Costa faces 12 counts of aggravated reckless conduct with a firearm and one count of discharging a firearm near a dwelling.

He was denied bail and is awaiting his initial court appearance.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
