HINGHAM — A recent crash in Hingham demonstrated the importance of remaining inside a vehicle after an accident, according to local police officials.
The Hingham Police Department shared information about the incident as a safety reminder to motorists involved in collisions.
Police emphasized that staying inside a vehicle after a crash can prevent additional injuries, particularly in situations involving potential hazards such as downed electrical wires.
“This crash scene is a great reminder of why we recommend staying in your car after a crash,” the Hingham Police Department stated in their public safety announcement.
Authorities noted that well-meaning bystanders could inadvertently cause more harm by moving injured drivers from vehicles before emergency personnel arrive.
Police recommended that witnesses call 9-1-1 and remain safely nearby rather than intervening directly at crash scenes.
The department explained that hazards such as energized electrical wires may not be immediately visible to untrained observers.
“Surveying the scene for hazards” is one of the first safety protocols officers learn when responding to accident scenes, according to the statement.
