STURBRIDGE — The Sturbridge Police Department warned residents Tuesday about scammers who are “spoofing” the department’s business phone number to demand fraudulent bond payments.
The scam involves calls that appear to come from the official police business line, 508-347-2525, on caller ID displays.
According to police officials, the callers falsely claim that residents must pay bond money through a kiosk to avoid arrest.
“The Sturbridge Police Department will never request money over the phone or instruct individuals to deposit funds into any kiosks,” the department stated in a public alert.
Authorities advise residents who receive such calls to hang up immediately and avoid sharing any personal or financial information.
