ROME — A Rome Police Department patrol officer was injured Sunday after attempting to stop a bicyclist who fled and resisted arrest.

Donald J. Rundell was observed riding his bicycle in the 200 block of Henry Street in violation of several New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws, according to police.

When an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Rundell allegedly failed to comply and fled the scene.

The officer later located Rundell on Lawrence Street and pursued him on foot.

As the officer caught up and grabbed Rundell’s backpack, police say Rundell pulled away, causing the officer to fall and hit his head on the pavement.

Rundell was located by other patrol units and taken into custody at approximately 12:56 p.m. in the 200 block of Erie Boulevard West.

Authorities charged Rundell with second-degree assault, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, fourth-degree criminal mischief and multiple vehicle and traffic law citations.

The injured officer was transported to Rome Health where he was treated for minor lacerations to his hands and face.
