LEROY — A woman was arrested on reckless endangerment charges following a structure fire at a multi-family residence on Union Street early Tuesday morning.

LeRoy Police Department, along with LeRoy Fire and EMS, responded to the scene where they found heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the second floor of the apartment building.

Detective Vangalio and Officer Riley entered the burning structure to check for occupants.

Detective Vangalio located and escorted an elderly female resident to safety, while Officer Riley confirmed the remainder of the residence was clear.

A criminal investigation led by Detective Vangalio determined the fire originated in a second-floor bedroom.

According to police, the defendant admitted to smoking crack cocaine the night before and attempting to light a cigarette using two broken lighters while sitting on her bed, which allegedly ignited the mattress and surrounding materials.

The defendant reportedly left the burning home and drove to Rochester to purchase more crack cocaine, despite having a revoked driver’s license.

All residents of the building have been displaced due to the fire, including a mother and son from the lower apartment who were safely evacuated.

The Red Cross is working with those affected to provide shelter and support.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including LeRoy Fire, LeRoy EMS, Genesee County Emergency Management, and mutual aid fire agencies.
