Search continues for missing 4-year-old boy in Lowell, MA river

LOWELL — Authorities are searching for a 4-year-old boy who was swept away in the Merrimack River on Saturday evening, according to Lowell Police Superintendent Greg Hudon.

The Lowell Police and Fire Departments responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:44 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, reporting that a child was in the water near the Western Canal in the area of 300 Arcand Drive and the Merrimack River.

Preliminary information indicates the boy was quickly pulled by the current into the Merrimack River.

Multiple agencies have joined the search effort, including the Lowell Police Drone Unit, Lowell Fire Department boats and Dive Team, Massachusetts State Police Airwing and Dive Team, UMass Lowell Police, and Environmental Police.

Firefighters from Dracut, Methuen and Lawrence have also been searching downstream areas of the river.

An investigation into how the boy ended up in the water remains ongoing.
