PORTLAND — Portland Police arrested a 39-year-old man following a two-hour standoff that began when officers found a motorhome illegally parked and blocking traffic at Elm and Lancaster Streets at 5:10 a.m. on April 20.

When officers attempted to contact the occupant, he threatened to get a gun and locked himself in the bathroom.

Officers initially tried to convince the man to exit and later deployed pepper balls into the motorhome, but he refused to come out.

The department’s Special Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiators were called to the scene as the situation escalated.

During the standoff, the occupant was observed wielding a large knife and box cutter, and at one point threw a hammer at officers.

After nearly two hours of negotiations, at 7:37 a.m., the occupant surrendered and was taken into custody after chemical munitions were deployed into the motorhome.

Ryan Adams of Portland was arrested and charged with Criminal Threatening, Criminal Threatening with a Dangerous Weapon, Refusing to Submit to Arrest or Detention, Obstructing a Public Way and Creating a Police Standoff.

Adams was transported to the Cumberland County Jail following his arrest.
