SCHENECTADY — A domestic dispute turned deadly Thursday evening when a man shot his wife before taking his own life, according to Schenectady police.

Officers responded to 540 North End Drive at approximately 7:19 p.m. after neighbors reported an altercation.

Upon arrival, officers heard a woman screaming from an upstairs apartment that a man had a gun.

As officers entered the building and climbed the stairs of a common hallway, they heard two gunshots from inside the apartment.

When officers forced entry into the unit, they encountered a female victim suffering from gunshot wounds to her hand and torso.

Additional officers rushed the woman to safety and began providing first aid.

Inside the apartment, officers found an adult male with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The man, identified as Donald Rickson, 44, of Schenectady, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police confirmed Rickson was married to the female victim, whose name is being withheld.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Police say the investigation remains open and ongoing.
